After its humiliating football loss to Ole Miss (45 – 0) Friday, MSU has announced the resignation of coach Sylvester Croom, the first black head football coach in the Southeastern Conference. Most MSU fans were probably happy at Croom’s decision, though many will likewise sympathize with the man. What lies ahead for the Maroon and White, and for Coach Croom? Vicksburg Post vs. Beacon Hill Institute
The Beacon Hill Institute of Boston rated Mississippi dead last among the 50 states in terms of competitiveness when attempting to attract new businesses. The Vicksburg Post in a Sunday editorial took issue, claiming the study was a “hoax.” In a Letter-to-the-Editor printed in Wednesday’s Post, David G. Tuerck, Executive Director of BHI, challenged the Post to disprove its findings, saying “…I’m sure that you’ll want to expose our little hoax in detail. You’ll want to tell us just how we rigged the data to get our preconceived results. If not, then I’m also sure you’ll want to print a retraction. That is, unless respect for the truth no longer commands the respect that it once did down your way.”
It will be quite interesting to watch the Post for its reaction, for its defense of its charge, or a retraction thereof.

Cameras to enforce Vicksburg traffic laws?
The City of Vicksburg is considering the installation of cameras at the intersections of Halls Ferry Road/Pemberton Boulevard and Mission 66/Clay Street to finger drivers who disregard the traffic signals installed there. Natchez and other cities across the country have already approved such installations. At no cost to the city, the company that provides the cameras makes its profit by splitting traffic fines collected as a result of the apprehension of lawbreakers. The VPD supports the project, but there are many people across the country who have decried such installations as an infringement upon their rights. How do feel about such?
Our bridge, our dilemma
The Old Highway 80 bridge across the Mississippi River belongs to us – the people of Warren County. An opinion editorial in the Post describes the present situation:
Management of the U.S. 80 Bridge over the Mississippi River remains as murky as the water swirling below.
It shouldn’t be that way.
The old bridge, now used exclusively by Kansas City Southern for its trains and as an attachment point for the cables of assorted utilities, is a public asset. It is owned by the people of Warren County who are being given absolutely no clue as to what’s on the minds of Warren County supervisors or the five members they appoint to the bridge commission.
Last week, for at least the third time in the past seven months, supervisors and commissioners met behind closed doors for well over an hour.
It’s their option to do so, they say, because KCS has threatened to take them to court and state law allows secret sessions when public bodies face “potential litigation.”
“Allows” is a key word here, because nothing in the law requires any of their discussions to be held outside the public’s hearing. If they had any desire to be open and forthright with voters, they could. That’s not the case. Even before and after such sessions, supervisors are coy and evasive in answering questions — and not just about what was said but also the topic being discussed. Their considered position is the less you know the better. It’s their right to have it that way — not even telling you the options being reviewed.
The facts are these:
* Warren County has owned the bridge, built privately and opened in 1930, since the end of World War II.
* From the start, the county’s plan was to use tolls to pay off the purchase price and thereafter to set tolls to pay for operation and maintenance on a break-even basis.
* The vehicular roadbed was closed 10 years ago due to deteriorating concrete. There are no plans for it ever to be reopened to traffic if for no other reason than it is too narrow to meet legal minimums.
* The long-term lease with KCS is a dead letter and has been for years. An earlier agreement by the commission and supervisors to sell the bridge to KCS was revoked by supervisors after public protest. For safety reasons, KCS strongly opposes any plan to allow regular pedestrian traffic on the old roadbed in the form of a park or overlook.
* In 2005, the commission started billing KCS for new, far higher tolls. KCS, for the most part, has continued paying at the old rate as “negotiations” continued.
* Engineering reports say the bridge needs some work, but remains stable for the foreseeable future.
Anything else said about the bridge is speculation.
Why?
Because the Warren County Board of Supervisors has decided that it’s none of your business.
The bridge and its baggage have been kicked around for far too long. Isn’t it time the Board of Supervisors showed a bit of leadership on the issues?

New TV Station features locally produced shows!
Paige Caldwell, fresh from Mississippi State with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and her new husband, Steve, a local entrepreneur with family roots deep in Vicksburg, will soon bring commercial TV to Vicksburg.
Their first show is planned to focus on local real estate and is to soon be followed a regular interview format where local civic, business, government, church and social leaders will be invited to inform Vicksburg Video cable subscribers on their organizations or projects.
YLTV (Your Local TV) Vicksburg, the local ID for the shows on channel 88, is part of an expanding Mississippi network of StogMedia, a Jackson, Ms. based national cable network focusing on local ‘cable-captive’ TV stations. Others in Mississippi are Natchez, Brookhaven/McComb, Hattesburg/Laurel, Gulfport, Biloxi, Meridian and Jackson metro.
The company has affiliates coast to coast.
Charlie Stogner, StogMedia CEO, says he is elated a young couple fresh from college will be pioneering in establishing the equivalent of a commercial TV station at Vicksburg.
He says Paige’s recent college training combined with Steve’s computer and networking background will enable them to be on the leading edge of using new technology to bring local commercial TV to Vicksburg.
Stogner reports StogMedia is considered a pioneer in the use of Internet technology in the delivery of local TV to cable providers instead of satellite. He says even with low bandwidth YLTV/Vicksburg will soon be able to air ‘live’ events.
Paige says she’s eager to get started and expects to have other local shows developing as soon as the real estate show gets underway. She is originally from Gautier, Ms.

“Tammy’s Club” to open Hwy 61S
“Tammy’s Place,” formerly “Club Extreme,” will open Friday night at its location at 4303 Highway 61S. Tammy Smith, owner, was granted a special exception by the city zoning board. Other attempts to open nightclubs at 3961 North Washington Street by Tyrone King, and 2321 and 2624 Washington Street by Anthony Chiplin, have in the past been denied, primarily because they were located near residential areas.

Look at my fellow conservatives! There they go, glumly shuffling along, depressed by the election aftermath. Not me. I’m virtually euphoric. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not thrilled with America ’s flirtation with neo socialism. But there’s a massive silver lining in those magical clouds that lofted Barak Obama to the Presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America : The Era of White Guilt is over.
This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn’t give a fluff about skin color, and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively worked with America-hating domestic terrorists. Wow! Some resume! Yet they made Barak Obama their leader. Therefore, as of Nov 4th, 2008, white guilt is dead.
For over a century, the millstone of white guilt hung around our necks, retribution for slave-owning predecessors. In the 60s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution. But if a black man can become President, exactly what significant barrier is left? The election of Barak Obama absolutely destroys the entire validation of liberal white guilt. The dragon is hereby slain.
So today, I’m feeling a little “uppity,” if you will. From this day forward, my tolerance level for having my skin color hustled is now exactly ZERO. And it’s time to clean house. No more Reverend Wright’s “God Damn America ,” Al Sharpton’s Church of Perpetual Victimization , or Jesse Jackson’s rainbow racism. Cornell West? You’re a fraud. Go home. All those “black studies” programs that taught kids to hate whitey? You must now thank Whitey. And I want that on the final.
Congressional Black Caucus? Irrelevant. Maxine Waters? Shut up. ACORN? Outlawed. Black Panthers? Go home and pet your kitty. Black separatists? Find another nation that offers better dreams. Go ahead. I’m waiting.
Gangsta rappers? Start praising America . Begin with the Pledge of Allegiance. And please…no more ebonics. Speak English, and who knows where you might end up? Oh, yeah…pull up your pants. Your underwear is showing. You look stupid.
To those Eurosnots who forged entire careers hating America ? I’m still waiting for the first black French President.
And let me offer an equal opportunity whupping. I’ve always despised lazy white people. Now, I can talk smack about lazy black people. You’re poor because you quit school, did drugs, had three kids with three different fathers, and refuse to work. So when you plop your Colt 45-swilling, Oprah watchin’ butt on the couch and complain “Da Man is keepin’ me down,” allow me to inform you: Da Man is now black. You have no excuses.
No more quotas No more handouts. No more stealing my money because someone’s great-great-great-great grandparents suffered actual pain and misery at the hands of people I have no relation to, and personally revile.
It’s time to toss that massive, obsolete race-hustle machine upon the heap of the other stupid 60s ideas. Drag it over there, by wife swapping, next to dope-smoking Plenty of room right between free love and cop-killing. Careful…don’t trip on streaking. There ya go, don’t be gentle. Just dump it. Wash your hands. It’s filthy.
In fact, Obama’s ascension created a gargantuan irony. How can you sell class envy and American unfairness when you and your black wife went to Ivy League schools, got high-paying jobs, became millionaires, bought a mansion, and got elected President? How unfair is that??? Now, Like a delicious O’Henry tale, Obama’s spread-the-wealth campaign rendered itself moot by it’s own victory! America is officially a meritocracy. Obama’s election has validated American conservatism!
So, listen carefully…Wham!!!
That’s the sound of my foot kicking the door shut on the era of white guilt. The rites have been muttered, the carcass lowered, dirt shoveled, and tombstone erected. White guilt is dead and buried.
However, despite my glee, there’s apparently one small, rabid bastion of American racism remaining. Black Americans voted 96% for Barak Obama. Hmmm. In a color-blind world, shouldn’t that be 50-50? Tonight, every black person should ask forgiveness for their apparent racism and prejudice towards white people. Maybe it’s time to start spreading the guilt around.
