Who will be Vicksburg’s next mayor?

Who will be Vicksburg’s next mayor? Mayor Lawrence Leyens will probably run again, but many think the man is personality-challenged, an issue that has probably alienated many a voter. It’s rumored that Alderman Charles Mayfield will run, but his stint as Alderman has revealed little capability to lead this city. Alderman Sid Beauman is likewise very low-key, and has indicated no intention of being a candidate. Then there are former mayors Joe Loviza and Robert Walker, either of whom may decide to try it again. Some have mentioned Rep. George Flaggs’ as a possible contender. Should we seek additional candidates? Or should we be content with the field of aforementioned politicians?

  1. I wonder if Leyens can be reelected. I wish we could find another good candidate, somebody not on the scene now, with good leadership qualities and a vision for Vicksburg.

  2. I wonder if we can talk Mack Varner into running?

  3. Well, Mack Varner says he won’t run (personal reasons). I don’t know if Ronnie would run or not, but we should check with him to determine if he’s willing. There are a number of other good candidates for the job, but most are busy making money and don’t want to take the cut in pay that the mayor’s job would entail. We’ve got time, though, to search for a good candidate; suggestions from anyone will be welcomed.

  4. I HAVE ALWAY BEEN A “TURN THE OTHER CHEEK “SORT OF PERSON” UNTIL IT COMES TO MY FAMILY, BUT I FELT THAT I NEEDED TO RESPOND TO THIS NEGATIVE STATEMENT ABOUT SID BEAUMAN. I WILL NEITHER APOLIGIZE FOR WHO HE IS OR WHAT HE STANDS FOR. BEFORE MY HUSBAND DECIDED TO RUN FOR SOUTH WARD ALDERMAN THE 1ST TIME WE HAD A LONG DISCUSSION ABOUT THE STATE OF AFFAIRS IN VICKSBURG, MS (WHERE HE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN I MIGHT ADD). AT THE TIME WE KNEW THAT IT WAS NOT A PLACE THAT OUR THREE CHILDREN WOULD CONSIDER AS A PLACE TO LIVE ONCE THEY RECEIVED THEIR EDUCATION. HIS DECISION TO RUN WAS BASED ON MAKING VICKSBURG A SAFER AND BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. HIS FOCUS, WHEN HE WAS IN THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT WAS TO CLEAN UP THE CITY POOLS AND BUILD AN OLYMPIC SIZED POOL FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SWIM AND BE INVOLVED IN SWIM MEETS AS WELL. HE BUILT A BEAUTIFUL BALL FIELD OUT OF WHAT HAD ONCE BEEN A TRASH DUMP. THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN INVOLVED IN THE BASEBALL PROGRAM HAS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY. SPORTS PROGRAMS BRING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TOGETHER AND ALSO, PROVIDES THOSE CHILDREN IN A SINGLE PARENT HOME SOMEONE TO LOOK UP TO, AS WELL AS BUILDING THEIR CONFIDENCE LEVEL.

THE CHANGES IN VICKSBURG HAVE BEEN DRAMATIC. SID AND I ARE PROUD TO CALL VICKSBURG OUR HOME BUT WE BOTH KNOW THAT THERE IS STILL A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION BUT I SUGGEST THOSE PEOPLE TAKE A FIELD TRIP AROUND VICKSBURG AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT CITY HALL. GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!

  5. I commend you for defending your husband, Mrs. Beauman. It’s true that Vicksburg has seen much progress since he and the present administration took office. The mayor, however, takes credit for most of what is accomplished; Aldermen Beauman and Mayfield (and most other city employees) are generally relegated to some distant role that obscures whatever contribution they may make. Though they may risk the ire of our top elected official, perhaps each should make clear his/her own contributions occasionally.

You struck a bit of a “nerve” suggesting that we should make an appointment with city hall and “get to know the people that you are talking about.” As you must be aware, I have tried repeatedly to meet with Leyens, Beauman, and Mayfield to try and resolve some of the issues that have prevented the demolition or renovation of the collapsed buildings next door to my home and business at 717 Clay Street. Your husband and the other two “city fathers” have just as repeatedly informed me that they don’t want to talk to me. How they in good conscience can refuse to face me and discuss my problems (and allow this catastrophe to drag on and on unresolved!) is a conundrum that either a psychiatrist or a lawyer will have to eventually decipher. In the meantime, my family and I, and my tenants, function as best we can with the constant fear that the neglect of the three aforementioned officials may result in our financial ruin or even physical injury or death. I doubt I can ever forgive any of the three of them for their irresponsibility and disregard. Malcolm

  6. Varner would not have chance unless a bunch of other snakes were running.
